SOUTH HAVEN

Water Filtration Plant was awarded the Project of the Year by the American Public Works Association's Michigan Chapter.

The South Haven plant won for structures in the $5 million to $25 million category. The plant became operational in late May and provides clean drinking water to South Haven, the South Haven/Casco Township Water and Sewer Authority and Covert Township.

The new plant was built on the same site as

, on South Beach, but has a larger capacity. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality urged the city to increase the plant's capacity in 2009. The project came under some criticism when it went $2.5 million over budget.

Plant superintendent Bob Miller said the plant welcomes the public to schedule a tour. Most visitors have been impressed by what they saw, he said.

"It's a good example of taxpayers' dollars being very visible and being put to good work," he said. "It's a very easy plant to justify."

John Willemin was the lead consultant on the plant project and wrote and submitted the application for the award on the city's behalf. The Michigan Chapter of the APWA will recognize the project at its annual conference in May in Boyne Falls. The award qualifies the project to be forwarded to the APWA National Office to compete at the national level.
